Since the public launch of Race Wallet, we've added numerous races into the system to make it easier for the race participants to manage their races. Throughout the process, our team has been presented with different route map images for each event.
Each event presents its route maps in the form of an image. The majority of them post these updates on their respective Facebook pages. This leaves space for questions about the route's actual turning points, the route's actual elevation, and many more.
How can we make it better?
Making It Closer Than Ever
Starting today, we're introducing Race Map Elevation - an interactive map and chart designed to discover the route of your race at your fingertips.
This will allow you to explore the map - giving you the freedom to check the actual turning points of the route so you get a better visual idea of the location.
Combined with the interactive map, this also includes a chart showing you the elevation gain and maximum elevation so you can prepare yourself as you approach the kilometer.
Along with your hard work during training, we're also doing our best to make you closer than ever to your race. We want to provide you with information that will help you be more prepared.
No Changes, Just Making It Better
With the introduction of Race Map Elevation, we're glad to say that there will be no features or information that will be removed. Everything remains and it is.
The route preview image will still be there to guide you visually if that's what you prefer.
But when the time comes you need an interactive map to explore and see what's on the route and elevation profile, you have it at your fingertips starting now.
How Does Race Map Elevation Work?
The Race Map Elevation works as long as the event organizers release the corresponding routes to each distance of the race. Without it, the Race Map Elevation wouldn't work as you have guessed, there's nothing to show.
Once they release those, we are converting that information to a format where we can display it on the map with its elevation profile.
The elevation is based on the huge dataset of GPS Visualizer which makes it possible for us to display it in a chart.
Once everything is all set, the Race Map Elevation can be found on your race details. Oh, and you don't have to toggle any settings for it to be enabled for you. It is available for everyone.
How Accurate Is Race Map Elevation?
We aim to be precise with our map routes and elevation chart, however, nothing is perfect even our systems. Our conversions may fail, miss a few points, or go off by a couple of elevation meters, but that doesn't mean it is unreliable totally.
It may be just that the race's routes missed some information that would be helpful in our conversion process to attain better precision. There's just a lot of variables to consider when it goes off.
In the end, if you have some trouble or dislike the Race Map Elevation due to its accuracy, feel free to send us an email at [email protected] and we will see what we can do to improve it.
What's Next?
The introduction of Race Map Elevation is just the start of something new. There are still a lot of things we can do to improve it along the pipeline. Such as improving the precision, delivering it to you much faster and efficiently, and displaying kilometers so it is much better to visualize.
Maybe a 3D map will drive you to the actual route itself immensely. Heh, just another ambition for the future. We will see!
But for now, we're all set to show it to you! Stay tuned!
